In short
MovieGate has no account, no advertising, no analytics and no trackers. We collect no personal data: your IP address is never kept, and the content of your requests is kept only for the time it takes to answer you (see below).
The one exception, and only if you turn them on: notifications, described below.
What stays on your device
Your preferences (country, streaming platforms), the list of films marked “already seen” and the list of films suggested tonight are stored only on your device. They are not stored on our side and disappear if you uninstall the app, unless your phone's backup (Google or iCloud) restores them; the “already seen” list can also be cleared in the settings.
What leaves your device
To suggest films, the app queries our server (moviegate.app). A request contains what it takes to pick a film: your country, your platforms, your current moods (mood, who you're watching with, length or maximum length, discovery, “more like this”), the films not to suggest again (already suggested tonight or marked “already seen”) and, when you open a film page, that film's TMDB id. It contains no account or device identifier, no name, no email address.
To answer faster, the server keeps requests and their responses in memory for one hour at most, without your IP address, to serve the same response to an identical request. None of this is saved in a database.
At each launch, the app also asks our server whether a new version exists; that request contains nothing else.
Notifications
Notifications stay off until you turn them on. If you turn on the week’s new arrivals, the app gets a notification token for this installation from Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging) and sends it to our server with your language, country, platforms and time zone: that is what it takes to write to you on Friday evening. If you ask to be told when your guests answer, that token and your language are kept with the film night and deleted with it, by the next day at the latest. Notifications go through Google’s servers, which see their content (a guest’s first name, a film title) to deliver them to your phone. Turning notifications off deletes this data from our server at once.
Server logs
Our server keeps neither your IP address nor the content of your requests in its logs. For security and troubleshooting, they only record the date, the service called and the result of each request, with nothing that tells who made it. When a technical error occurs, the message may mention a country or a film, never who asked for it.
Data sources and third-party services
- Film information (titles, posters, synopses, ratings) comes from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
- Links to the platforms come from a third-party streaming-offer listing service. Our server is the one asking it, with the film's title and year, the country and the language: that service receives neither your IP address nor any information about you.
Images (posters, logos, photos) are downloaded directly from TMDB's image servers, which therefore see your IP address like any website you visit. When you tap “Watch” or “Trailer”, the platform, the film's TMDB page when no direct link exists, or YouTube opens and applies its own privacy policy. When you share a film, the app opens your phone's share sheet with a moviegate.app/film/… link: you choose who to send it to, nothing goes through us.
Your rights
Since we hold no data that identifies you, there is nothing to access, correct or delete on our side. For any question, write to us.
If you turned notifications on, turning them off in the app deletes at once what our server kept for them.
